A student’s mom is upset about her grades and that she’s not doing her homework. But the student thinks her mom is being too pushy. Like high school teens & parents everywhere, they’re both a little right — and also a little wrong.
The student’s mom is right to be concerned. And the student is naturally feeling stressed over doing something she is genuinely having trouble accomplishing. And that’s where the emotions get in the way.
This scenario plays out every day with high school teens and their parents. Sometimes students just don’t know how to do their school work. Worse, sometimes they don’t know how to go about studying. That’s where we can help.
Quadratic Formulas & Other Troubles
Our student is stuck on the Quadratic formula. She gets it when her teacher shows it in class, but when she has to do it on her own, she gets stuck. And then everything else becomes a problem, too.
What our student really needs isn’t a math tutor, but a friendly, positive mentor who can help her sort out her priorities and make sense of what her teachers are asking of her.
The student knows what she needs to do, she just has trouble balancing it all. And then her mom wants to know what’s going on, and it’s all very frustrating.
Academic Coaching & Mentoring
Tutoring s great and helps kids improve in a topic. And we believe in tutoring. But academic mentoring and coaching is far more beneficial here. We call it “reflection” and “goal setting” — kids call it “figuring it out.”
Guided by real classroom teachers, we engage our students in ongoing discussions for problem solving, goal setting and awareness. Our teachers are non-judgmental and positive, and kids respond with self-honesty and confidence.
